There’s No Such Thing as an Unlucky Day
In Indonesia, we often hear the saying "Tidak ada hari sial di Kalender," which means "there are no unlucky days on the calendar." This suggests that bad days can’t be predicted. I believed that, too—until last Friday, when my belief was truly tested.
For the past eight months, I’ve been working part-time as a butcher, and throughout all that time, I never had an accident. That streak ended last Friday. After lunch, my friend Arma wanted to make a ginger shot, and I offered to help by slicing some apples. I picked up a long knife I’d never used and started cutting the apples while holding them in my left hand.
Suddenly, I felt a sharp pain—I'd accidentally sliced my finger in half. Yes, you read that right, literally in half.
Both Arma and I were shocked. Blood poured out quickly, but Arma, thankfully, reacted fast. She managed to wrap my finger tightly with a bandage, and we rushed to find our boss, Laobanniang. She was just as panicked but didn't waste time, so she got me to the hospital on her motorbike.
The doctor quickly cleaned the wound and stitched it up in the emergency room. He also gave me an anesthesia shot in my finger—it was extremely painful, and I couldn't hold back my tears. While sitting in the E.R., still in pain, I kept thinking, "How did this happen?" I’d started my day with Bismillah (in the name of God), never imagining that something like this could occur.
Alhamdulillah, the doctor did a great job reattaching my finger, and now I just have to return in a few days for a check-up to make sure it’s healing properly. This incident taught me a hard lesson: never underestimate any task, no matter how simple it is.
I’m also deeply thankful to my boss, Laobanniang, for her support, especially for covering my hospital fees. I hope for a quick recovery and pray that nothing like this happens again!
